Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took center stage at the opening of the International CES Jan. 7 to announce that Microsoft would release a beta version of its new Windows 7 operating system this week. In addition, Ballmer announced new partnerships for its Windows Live Essentials product, including a deal with Dell that will allow Microsoft to pre-install Live Search with Dell’s consumer and small business PCs. Earlier in the day, Microsoft also struck a search deal with Verizon Wireless.

Microsoft expects its Xbox game console sales to outpace broader market growth next year, a senior executive said on Wednesday, projecting optimism despite dampened consumer spending. Although the global economic slowdown has hit consumer demand, Microsoft expects the overall video game industry to continue growing next year as more people choose to stay at home, said Alan Bowman, Asia general manager of Xbox operations.

At the 2009 CES expo, Intel will officially roll out an updated version of its Classmate PC reference design that adds several new capabilities. The most significant additions to the Classmate PC design are a convertible tablet and touch-screen options. In addition, Intel is now offering its own Atom processors with the Classmate PC instead of a low-power Celeron chip used in previous designs. While the Intel Classmate PC is considered akin to a number of "netbooks" and mini-notebooks that have been developed in the past year, it primarily competes against the One Laptop Per Child PC that has been developed for the education market and school children.

Intel will officially launch the latest version of its Classmate PC reference design at the 2009 CES in Las Vegas. This version of the Classmate PC laptop will include tablet and touch-screen features and allow Intel and its OEM partners to offer two different types of low-cost laptops for school children. This version of the Intel Classmate PC will include an Intel Atom processor and support for Microsoft Windows XP as well as several Linux operations system flavors, including Ubuntu.

Microsoft says a release candidate version of its Internet Explorer 8 browser is imminent and application developers ought to get ready. Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer at Microsoft, says Microsoft will soon release an RC version of the IE 8 browser with enhanced standards support, better tooling and other new features added since the Beta 2 release of the Web browser.
